Calming Stone ll

This sculpture, part of Diane Griffin's Points of Unity series continues to investigate the ‘otherness’ of emotions and offers a focal point for connecting with memories, personal stories and emotions, establishing private moments of contemplation. It's a dynamic sculpture that has a transient feel to it whilst exploring concepts of fragility, weight and balance.

The base form is covered in a textured, dry volcanic glaze to evoke the feel of stone. Next are individual layers of thin unglazed porcelain which are encouraged to ripple and move during the making and firing processes. Seemingly delicately resting on top is a gold teardrop form, mottled to create an aged, weathered feel. The way Diane has treated each element of this piece highlights the varied qualities of ceramics by way of contrasts. Rough surfaces accentuate the thin ruffled edges of the stacked sheets and in turn the shiny metallic finish on the teardrop form.
